FAQs

Common Boiler Faults Questions and Answers

Radiators not getting hot enough is a common problem which is caused by the air that gets trapped inside the radiators. This can be fixed by bleeding the radiator using a bleed key. Another issue could be the cold patches on the radiators that are caused by the water in the system being dirty. In some cases, we may recommend a power flush to resolve this issue. The radiator valve can sometimes need replacing too. Having a new thermostatic radiator valve will give you the benefits of being able to control the heat to your preferred temperature and ensure that your radiator heats up properly.

We believe the most common cause of a boiler losing the pressure is a leak on the central heating system. The pressure relief valve can be faulty or the expansion vessel failing, and sometimes it can be both.

If your boiler is making some popping or banging noises when turned on, this is something called kettling. It is a common issue in the area of hard water that lime scale build-up on the heat exchanger and restrict the flow of water and cause localised boiling which making hot water to turn into steam. Sometime a power flushing service is recommended to clean out the system debris.

Thermostats can start being unreliable at controlling the temperature. This happens when they get older as they can become inaccurate with their temperature readings. This means that they will turn the boiler on and off at the wrong time. Replacing a new thermostat will help to solve this problem.

If your boiler and central heating is working but you have no hot water, or your heating  is not working but the water is, then it is very likely that you may have a problem with the diverter valve that is losing control when it is opening and closing. If the diverter valve is stuck, then you will need to contact a Gas Safe engineer to come out and fix it.

If your boiler seems to be working fine and your hot water is functioning properly, but your central heating is not working there could be the problem either with the settings on your boiler and central heating system, or the diverter valve. You will need to call the Gas Safe engineer to come out to fix this for you.
